Dowell Idol began teaching piano and voice full-time in Jacksonville, NC
in 1982 after graduating from East Carolina University with a Bachelor of
Music Degree in Piano Pedagogy and Performance. While at ECU, he
also received extensive training-in-music education and choral
conducting. Idol also holds an Associate degree in Fine Arts from
Brevard College. He has continued his education through private study,
teacher workshops, and regular attendance of musical events.
Idol has been a member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers since
1982. Since that time, hundreds of his piano students have achieved
honors by participating in the annual national auditions. He became an
adjudicator for the NGPT in 1993 and has judged piano students
throughout North Carolina. He has also judged at
the Classical Period Piano Competition at Old Dominion University in
Norfolk, Virginia and for Durham Music Teachers Association at Duke
University.
As a member of the Music Teachers National Association and North
Carolina Music Teachers Association, Idol's students have been
recognized for their outstanding performances at the state convention
honors recitals for many years. Idol has served on the Executive Board
of NCMTA as Community Outreach and Education Chair and as NCMTA
District judge at Meredith College in Raleigh. He has also been a
featured
at a NCMTA convention.
Throughout the years, several of Idol's students have won or placed at
state and regional competitions and have been recipients of cash
prizes and prestigious scholarships. Several of his former piano and
voice students have gone on to pursue degrees in music. Idol is
committed to providing a complete music education for his students in
order for them to prepare for any musical possibility, whether it is
professional career or a lifelong hobby.
Dowell Idol has also served as accompanist for various local high
schools and for several of the visiting artists at Coastal Carolina
Community College. He has been employed as church music director,
choir director, and church pianist.
He is the father of three children - Jason, Kristen, and David. He has
two granddaughter: Madision and Olivia.
